How Ajrak is Made

Ajrak is created through a traditional, labour-intensive process practiced by skilled artisans, particularly in Sindh. The fabric goes through repeated stages of washing, preparing, hand block printing, resist printing, dyeing and drying. Each motif is carefully stamped onto the cloth using hand-carved wooden blocks, with the artisan aligning every impression by hand.

Traditional Ajrak is recognised for its geometric and floral motifs, symmetry, layered patterns and rich earthy colours. Depending on the technique and design, several blocks may be used to build a single pattern, and the fabric may pass through multiple printing and dyeing stages before it is complete.

What Makes Hand Block Printing Special?

Unlike machine printing, every block is placed and pressed by human hands. This means no two pieces will ever be absolutely identical. Slight differences in colour, pressure, alignment or the impression of a motif are natural characteristics of the craft—not defects.
